Military Base Indiana - Indianapolis, Ind. (WXIX) - Camp Atterberry, a training camp in south-central Indiana, has been approved to host thousands of Afghan refugees, according to U.S. Rep. Greg Pence.
On Tuesday, Pence said he had received confirmation from the US Department of Defense for Camp Atterberry.

Gov. Eric Holcomb said in a statement that the state is proud to provide a temporary home for refugees.
"As Hoosiers, we are proud of our work and providing a temporary home for Afghan refugees," Holcomb said. "Our federal partners are taking the necessary and appropriate steps to ensure that there is a smooth process to allow these men, women and children to quickly find their permanent homes across America. I am confident in the Indiana National Guard's ability to support this federal mission."
Located about 40 miles from Indianapolis, Camp Atterbury joins Fort Pickett, Marine Corps Base Quantico, and Fort Lee, Va. Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort McCoy, Wisconsin; Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.; and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in N.J. to provide temporary housing and aid to 50,000 Afghans.
Task Force Atterbury, made up of active duty and National Guard service members, will provide housing, medical care, supplies and transportation to the refugees once they arrive, which has yet to be determined.

The camp later housed prisoners of war from Germany and Italy. A small Catholic chapel was built by the restored Italian prisoners in 1989.

Originally, Camp Atterberry covered more than 43,000 acres, but the facility was reduced to 30,000 acres, and the remainder was taken over by the Atterberry Job Corps, the US Department of Labor, the Hoosier Horse Park, and the Johnson County Parks Department.
